T he Bluewater fishing family of customers, staff and brand partners have a deep history of friendly competition and major accomplishments in some of the world’s top billfish hot spots and tournaments. 2018 was a banner year for releasing large numbers, landing gigantic fish, and in some cases, even bigger purses! We’re honored and excited to recognize some of these outstanding milestones by the Bluewater family: Far-flung Locales A growing contingent of Bluewater customers have been wintering their boats in the Caribbean, fishing various combinations of the Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas. After winning the Dominican’s Casa de Campo Cup, the crew aboard Whoo Dat spent most of the year in the US Virgin Islands. Fishing out of St. Thomas, they racked up over 150 blue marlin releases in 2018—most caught by 16-year old Kaleb Richardson! His father Keith reports he’s incredibly pleased to see what a great angler Kaleb’s become and everything he’s accomplished since his first marlin release at 7 years old. Also in the DR, Laney Jones and her 77’ battlewagon Mama Who won the 2018 Casa de Campo Blue Marlin Classic, and the Huddles’ Builder’s Choice championed the Casa de Campo Open in both 2018 and 2019. The Sydes family fished their new Viking 66, Reel Development , extensively in the Dominican Republic too and are excited to build on that experience. Builder’s Choice was also invited to the fish in the exclusive 2018 Custom Boat Shootout in the Bahamas. In addition to placing second overall among this event’s heralded “elite fleet,” Capt. Brent Gaskill and his crew helped guide Meredith Joyner Huddle to Top Lady Angler honors. Meanwhile, others tested their luck chasing giant blue marlin off Bermuda. Waste Knot , Sea Striker and Mama Who all placed in a leg of the 2018 running of the Bermuda Triple Crown series. Captain Patrick “Pizza” Kannan, the Poole family and their 67’ Waste Knot won the Bermuda Release Cup. Fishing in between those events, angler Dan Stephano and mate Catlin Peele of the Sea Toy caught a grander marlin that officially tipped the Hamilton scales at 1,011 pounds. It was the first landed grander of Capt. Bull Tolson’s well-weathered and prolific fishing career! The Jarrett Bay 90, Jaruco won Leg 3 and placed 3rd overall in the 2018 Los Sueños Triple Crown with 2800 total points.
