Building a better boat everyday has been at the heart of Viking Yachts' mission for over 60 years. Part of delivering on that promise is recognizing a winning form factor and always improving on it to the benefit of their customers. The 50foot hull has arguably been one of the best model ranges for Viking throughout their history. So much so that they are now preparing to release a full spread of four all-new 50-footers as their third generation offering at this length. A HISTORIC WINNER One of the most popular midsize sportfishing convertibles ever launched, the first-generation Viking 50 Convertible sold over 120 hulls during its decade-long production run. Launched in 1991 and retired in 2001, the original 50 Convertible was one of the best-selling Viking models ever produced. Viking revisited this venerable favorite by unveiling the second generation 50 Convertible at the 2008 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. This model was an instant success, leading to the delivery of 42 boats in just five years. Now, 12 years later, the 50 is coming back in no less than four major configurations. The new 50 Convertible, currently under construction, will be joined by a 50 Billfish, 50 Open and 50 Sport Coupe and Sport Tower flavors. Each new model is designed to cater to slightly different boating styles while maintaining Viking's renowned quality and performance. "We're constantly innovating—designing, refining, and engineering to improve upon what we've done," says Pat Healey, Viking President and CEO. "We've been at the top of this market for decades. The Viking 50 is the result of all its predecessors." The world premiere of the 50 Convertible will be at the 2025 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October, with the 50 Billfish slated to launch just a couple months later at the 2026 Annual Viking VIP event in South Florida. HIGH-TECH CONSTRUCTION In a constant effort to maximize strength and minimize weight, Viking is utilizing next-generation construction materials to build the Viking 50 Convertible and her sister models. This is achieved with the use of various core materials and composites—including carbon fiber— plus an advanced construction technique called Light Resin Transfer Molding. The hull and structural bulkheads, along with all tanks including fuel, water and holding are infused to optimize the fiberglassto-resin ratio, achieving exceptional strength. Viking states that significant weight savings have also been achieved with specially selected interior woods and materials. These efforts extend to many small details, including composite seacocks which eliminate corrosion and increase longevity in addition to the weight savings.
