The 1984 Catalina Tall Rig, deep draft (5’3”) MOONDANCE is not your average Catalina 30. The Catalina 30 design is well known and well venerated over the past five decades. It one of the most successful designs ever for many reasons. It is a well made, voluminous 30Ft. sailboat that is just as suitable for exploring as it is for extended cruising. Simple in design, layout, and appointments, it checks a lot of boxes for a lot of sailors. The designer and manufacturer, Frank Butler, treated every boat that was produced, as a representation of his personal commitment to excellence.
The Catalina 30 Tall Rig is a version of the original design that addressed the needs of the sailor desiring a more competitive boat. The 2 ft.taller mast, and longer boom, made for a larger mainsail. The boat was faster, higher pointing upwind, and more responsive than the standard rig. The deep keel added more ballast for stability.
