General Description

GANDALF' is a proven vessel with a steel hull and deck that can shoulder to weather without shuddering or stalling in the wave troughs and also track flawlessly in big following seas.'GANDALF' has been thoughtfully maintained by a renowned Porsche mechanic and his wife. Between 1992 and 2017 this vessel has been extensively improved and enhanced by the owner's. Between 1992-1997 the hull, deck and exterior was totally stripped and refinished, sandblasted where needed, primer and painted throughout the inside and out. As a result many aspects of the custom upgrades includes special features such as stainless steel fittings where possible are welded to the deck, along with stainless steel plating reinforced around the entire toe-rail. During this mid 90's work schedule total replacement of Electrical and Plumbing systems were done. The standing and running rigging was replaced in 2003. A new Yanmar diesel was installed in 1999, and the transmission was rebuilt in 2008.. In addition to this having been built and maintained to a superb level, this fine steel vessel is a fast passage maker and can be handled easily by one or two people (Newport to Bermuda in 3-1/2 days).

Completing an 8 year Round-the-World cruise the speed, steel construction and maneuverability of this vessel was a life-savor for the owner's, during a pirate attack off the coast of Yemen in 2005

"Gandalf" has a wealth of detail not found on other vessels and is a superb example of a beautifully built steel yacht.

Fully equipped with many spare parts and ready to sail away.

Accommadations

As befitting a well-built world cruising yacht, GANDALF's interior is solid, easy to maintain, with vast amounts of storage space in dedicated lockers and cabinets. Materials selection is a combination of white Formica on marine plywood, with varnished teak and mahogany trim throughout, a nice balance of brightness and elegance. A high level of detail is evident with positive cabinet latches, louvered or raised panel locker doors, fiddled counters and shelves, rounded corners, and well-spaced handholds.

Forward is a chain locker followed by a comfortable double Pullman berth to starboard with deep storage under and shelves outboard. Opposite is a large storage/hanging locker.

An open cabin is next after to starboard with upper/lower berth's and a large open storage locker opposite.

As a result of oversized ports in the raised deck, the main salon is airy and bright. The dinette features a drop-leaf teak table and comfortable settee's port and starboard. A coal/wood burning stove is mounted against the main bulkhead. There is amply storage and lighting in the main salon.

Galley

The U-shaped Galley in this boat is spacious and airy, yet secure for underway use. There you'll find a Force 10 Three Burner Propane Stove and Oven, Adler-Barbour refrigeration for cold storage, two deep Stainless Sinks w/hot and cold pressured water and excellent stowage for provisions outboard and under the counters.

Electrical

The Electrical System aboard starts with detailed Distribution Panels for both 12V and 110V Systems. Two Gel Batteries (375 Amp Hours) stay charged via the 2 Solar Panels, plus an Ampair Wind generator. There's also a 50 ft. 30A Shore power Cord. No battery charger is needed as the solar panels and wind generator keep the batteries up. An Inverter provides 110V Power from the Batteries.

A PUR WaterMaker, is located under the companionway steps and is easily accessed for maintenance and use.

Deck

On Deck forward find a 45lb CQR in the Roller, attached to 300' of Galviized 3/8" high tensile chain, plus (5) spare anchors, with spare anchor rode for forward and aft anchoring . A Maxwell Electric Windlass brings it all up easily. The high toe-rail around the deck makes for safe footing. Stanchions are oversized for safe passage fore and aft on deck.There are ample hatches, dorade vents and opening ports to keep the interior of the vessel well ventilated. There is an Emergency Tiller and (2) Propane SS tanks in the cockpit.

In the Cockpit find 2 Lewmar #65 ST's for the Primaries, plus 2 #40 Lewmar Winches for Halyards;

Spar is a Spica Spruce wood middle section wrapped with 3M clear plastic on a 7/8 Mast-head rig, which steps on the keel. The rig is oversized SS cable which was replaced in 2003. A Radar is mounted aft on a custom SS stern tower, that houses the outboard motor, a few spare anchors and a hoisting crane to lift things (like the outboard) out of the water.
