From Soundings July 27, 2006

Sailboat builder Freedom Yachts went for a traditional look in conceiving the Legacy 40 Sedan, and the boat’s Down East roots can be seen in the sturdy, high-sided hull, the coach roof and wheelhouse, and a touch of neat wood trim. The interior look is traditional, too, with white paneling offset by varnished teak, cherry or mahogany trim.

Tradition aside, the boat rides a lightweight modified-vee hull cored with foam, with a sharp entry, wide chine flats and lifting strakes, and 17 degrees of transom deadrise. A traditional full-length skeg provides directional stability and prop protection in the single-engine version.

Engine

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Caterpillar 3126 Overview Manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. Also called 3126B, 3126E Production 1995-2003 Layout Configuration Straight-six diesel engine Displacement 7.2 litres (1.6 imp gal; 1.9 US gal) Combustion Fuel type Diesel Chronology Successor C7

The Caterpillar 3126 is a turbocharged 7.2L inline 6-cylinder diesel engine manufactured by Caterpillar and first introduced in 1995; it was the first electronic mid-range diesel engine that Caterpillar produced.[1] It is the successor to the Caterpillar 3116 engine and was updated to become the Caterpillar C7 engine in 2003.[1] It is a medium-duty engine and has been used in dump trucks, long haul trucks, ambulances, buses, RVs, boats, cranes, fire trucks, and more.[2] In 1998, Caterpillar released an improved version, the 3126B. In 2002, the 3126E was released, though these improved versions only affected engine electronics, not the actual engine design.[1] Caterpillar launched a three-tier system of overhaul kits for the 3126 and its C7 successor in 2011.[3]

It was rated for multiple power and torque applications from 170HP to 420HP and 420LB-FT(569NM) to 860LB-FT(1166NM).

Current owners bought the boat at the end of 2006 when there were 509 hours (lower gauge) showing on the engine. Current hours showing 3501, so from 2007 to 2024 the current owners have put close to 3000 hours on the Caterpillar engine (Serial Number 1ZJ02676).

Hull and Construction

Hull and Deck are infused Vinylester construction with all thru hull spaces designed to isolate core materials from water penetration. Hull and deck are cored with Corecell(tm)and endgrain balso. Gelcoat in an ISO_NPG type. Exhaust and thruster tubes are molded into the hull.

Stringers are formed by a longitudinal and transverse framing grid constructed of FRP with reinforced engine area bonded to the hull. Three sealed 3/4" marine grade structural bulkheads are bonded to the hull to form four compartments; the forepeak, main cabin, engine room, and lazarette.

The bilges are finished in white gelcoat with removable heavy rubber matting in four compartments of the engine room.

The rubbing strake is molded into the hull and reinforced with additional glass infused. 1' stainless steel solid back half oval rub strip attached with 316 SS fasteners to the hull.

Limber holes are installed throughout the stringer system to allow for drainage of all compartments with the exception of the engine sumps and stern thruster compartment. These areas are sealed to isolate the machinery fluids from the bilge system.
