German Frers Bluewater Cutter with a Comprehensive 2025 Refit
Alora is a late model Hylas 56, a 2017 model year center cockpit cutter designed by German Frers and built by Queen Long Marine in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Frers, the designer behind generations of Nautor’s Swans and Hallberg-Rassys, gave the 56 a long waterline, a secure cockpit and a large owner’s stateroom aft. Her hull is built solid, with no coring, from hand laid fiberglass and Twaron aramid in vinylester resin, and she carries 20,020 lbs of external lead ballast on a fin keel with a bulb, with her rudder protected by a partial skeg. Cruising World named the Hylas 56 its Best Premium Cruiser Over 55 Feet in the 2011 Boat of the Year awards.
Her rig is a fractional cutter, with a Selden keel stepped mast and electric in mast furling for the main, a Furlex furler for the 115% genoa and a removable inner stay for a hank on staysail. Five of her eight Antal winches are electric, and the windlass, winches and main furling all run from push buttons in the cockpit, so a couple can handle her comfortably. Below are three cabins and two heads, each head with its own shower stall, all finished in varnished teak. For long passages and remote anchorages she carries a Spectra watermaker, a Northern Lights generator, a 1,020 Ah AGM house bank with a wind generator and 3,000 W inverter, an SSB, Cruisair air conditioning and Webasto diesel heat, plus a Side Power bow thruster for tight marinas.
Over the winter of 2024/25 Alora had a thorough refit at Yacht Marin in Marmaris, Turkey. Her black topsides were repainted, the aft deck was refinished in Awlcraft, the hull and deck were polished, and the bottom was sanded smooth and given two coats of Micron 66. The Yanmar and the Northern Lights were serviced, along with every winch, the windlass, all the seacocks and the Furlex, and the fuel tanks were cleaned. She also has a new bimini, dodger, full cockpit enclosure and cockpit cushions, new sheets, halyard and furling lines, and a freshly serviced liferaft. Alora is located in Annapolis, Maryland.

Interior Accommodations and Layout
Alora’s interior is classic Hylas: hand finished teak joinery and teak veneers in a satin varnish, a high gloss teak sole with light inlays, cream synthetic leather upholstery and vinyl covered headliner panels. Tinted saloon windows, Manship stainless steel hatches and sixteen opening ports bring in light and air, and Cruisair air conditioning and a Webasto diesel heater keep her comfortable in any climate.
The companionway leads down from the center cockpit into the saloon, where an L shaped dinette with a large table that seats six sits to port and a settee runs along the starboard side. The nav station is at the aft end of the saloon on the port side, with the main electrical panels and the controls for the ship’s systems. To starboard, the galley lines the passage that leads aft to the owner’s stateroom, which has a centerline double berth, a settee, a vanity and an en suite head with a separate shower to port. Forward of the saloon are two guest cabins: a single to port that converts to a small double, and the forward cabin, with a double berth and its own door to the forward head, which also has a separate shower.
